Wreathes across America observed in Longview

LONGVIEW,TX (KLTV)- While many east Texans are busy shopping and chasing just the right gift for the holidays, some took time out today to remember those that made our freedoms possible, in a solemn ceremony. At Rosewood cemetery in Longview, veterans and civil air patrol members gathered to honor veterans past.

"Today is the annual wreathes across America wreath laying ceremonies, which is happening all over the country," says captain Carolyn Morton of the Gregg county civil air patrol.

A wreath was placed at the base on each military branch flag, by a former member of that branch.

"Its important to remember and honor our veterans who've given the ultimate sacrifice for our country," Morton says.

Away from shopping malls and strip centers, they came give a quiet dignity to those laid to rest here.

"There is no brass band , there is no fanfare, all a veteran wants is a thank you, that's it , we don't need a brass band," says Vietnam veteran John Ashcroft.

Volunteers spread out and made sure every veteran resting in Rosewood , had a wreath on their grave site. As they enjoy the holiday season, they remember those who sacrificed theirs.

"Without these veterans we would not have these freedoms," Ashcroft says.

Organizers hope to raise enough money next year to put wreathes on every veterans grave in every cemetery in Longview.
