False 911 Calls Create Problem

Smith County 911 operators say they answer up to 10 false calls or non-emergency calls a day. That may not sound like a lot but with just 3 operators on call at certain times, a tied up line can be critical.

Smith County's 911 Manager, Yolanda Muhammad, said reducing the number of false calls has been a work in progress.

"We do have a public education coordinator we try to make sure that the public is aware that a call to 911 is for emergency purposes only."

False emergency calls can also be costly. They're considered a class B misdemeanor, punishable by a fine or, in some cases, even jail time.
