Chapel Hill wins 3A D-I State Championship!

ARLINGTON, TX (KLTV) - It was by no means pretty, but Chapel Hill won the 3A Division I state championship on Friday, with a thrilling 20-19 win over Alvarado.

The Bulldogs (15-0) finish the year as the wire-to-wire #1 team in the state.

Much like the previous three playoff games, it was a barnburner in Cowboys Stadium.

Chapel Hill jumped out 13-0 in the 1st quarter, after a Andrew Tucker touchdown run and an Avery Saenz TD pass to Tre Allen.

Tucker led the Bulldogs in rushing with 78 yards on 20 carries.

However, Alvarado scored two unanswered to knot the score at 13 apiece at halftime.

It remained 13-13 into the 3rd until Saenz hit Nelson Onwuzu on a 55 yard touchdown to give Chapel Hill a 20-13 lead.

Saenz led Chapel Hill in passing with 9 completions on 17 attempts for 117 yards and the two scores.

Onwuzu had 3 receptions for 61 yards and the game-winning touchdown.

Alvarado would score in the 4th to make it 20-19, but butchered the extra point and continued to trail by a point.

In the 4th, Chapel Hill was stopped on consecutive 4th downs inside Indian territory.

But the defense stepped up.

Avery Hendreson interceped a pass mid-way through the quarter.

And when Alvarado drove down inside the Chapel Hill 20, the play of the game was made.

After catching a 6 yard pass, Alvarado's Austin Ellinger fumbled and Sir Calvin Wallace recovered, in essence, icing the game for Chapel Hill.

The Bulldogs ran out the clock, they stormed the field after claiming their 1st state championship since 1989.

We will have much more on the state championship for Chapel Hill coming up tomorrow on East Texas News Weekend at 6 &10.
