KILGORE, TX (KLTV) - Residents in one Kilgore neighborhood say a vacant house on their street is home to dozens of rats ... And those rats are now spilling over into their homes.

In fact, they've been fighting the infestation for five days.

"They were running over the roof. They were all outside, some were sitting on the window unit. They were just everywhere," said Roderick Caldwell.  He says these last few days have been a nothing short of a battle.

"I shot about three or four with my BB gun and my son and nephew had sticks, mops and brooms and they were beating on them. Here's one of 'em here. I got to saw at least every bit, over twenty something plus rats. Twenty something at the minimum because I killed six," said Mr. Caldwell.

He says he has tried calling the property owner but hasn't gotten anywhere.

"When you're sitting and just ignoring the phone calls to me it makes me feel like you really don't care."  So he contacted the city of Kilgore.

"We got in touch with an agent or an employee of the landlord, let them know what the problem was and they said they'd be taking care of it", said Code Enforcement Officer, Justin Windham.

Mr. Windham says the infestation could grow into a health hazard if it's not fixed soon.
But, first he says the city must give the landlord enough time to get rid of the rats on their own.

"If the landlord hasn't addressed the problem then we would get with our animal control officer and our Director of Special Service and we'd sit down and try to figure out the best way to try to take care of the problem ourselves, " said Windham.

But for Roderick, just waiting is tough.

"I just want them to take care of whatever they need to do to take care of it and just get it done because it's....It's ridiculous," said Roderick.

We tried calling the property owner.  We left a message, but did not get a response.  The city says it will give her a couple weeks to take care of the problem, before stepping in.
