CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - A large whale washed up on a beach in Southeastern North Carolina Wednesday night.
The whale is a 16-foot-long Minke whale and was found on the beach around 8:45 p.m. near the Carolina Beach Boardwalk.
The deceased whale has injuries that appear to be consistent with shark bites said Paul Barrington with the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. Barrington said those injuries could have come after the whale died.
The UNCW Marine Fisheries team planned to take it away Thursday morning to perform a necropsy to determine the cause of death.
Barrington said it's not rare for whales to wash up on shore, and that it happens about two dozen times a year on NC's coast.
