7 On Your Side: Whitehouse Water Meter Test Results Are In

WHITEHOUSE, TX (KLTV)- We've told you before about the East Texas City of Whitehouse-- where residents said their water bills couldn't possibly be accurate.
So, homeowners -- some with $300 to $800 water bills -- confronted the city asking them to test their water meters. The city did and the test results don't seem to be turning up any answers.

"All of the meters came back reading in acceptable parameters," said City Manager Mike Peterson.

He said it turns out some meters were actually reading in the customer's favor, "It was reading less by 1 or 2 percent of the water that was going through the meter," Peterson said.

He said that means some of those water bills actually could have been just a little bit more.

Jessica Causey and her husband had a $600 water bill last month. This month it's just $68. She said they're not complaining about that one, but it just doesn't make sense.

"I don't feel like we've gotten the answers we needed. We have made progress, obviously my bill is lower, but I'm still unsure as to why I had two really outrageous bills and how there is such a drastic change within a month," Jessica said.

According to the bill, she and her husband went from using 61,000 gallons one month to 2,900 the next.

"We haven't changed anything about water usage," said Jessica.

"For the bill to have gone down, there has to have been a change. The meters are reading correctly so the only assumption we can make is that the water went though the meter," Peterson said.

The city said they've consulted a third party engineer and have pretty much done all they know to do as they troubleshoot the problem.
But Jessica, who paid more than $1,000 in water bills in just two months, said she hopes they can come up with something else. Something that will give her and her neighbors some answers.

Peterson said many people have requested for the city's finances to be audited to prove they're handling all of the money correctly.

He said there is an audit going on right now which should be finished in a couple of weeks.
He also said the city's past audits and check registers are available online.
