Obama asks republicans to extend payroll tax cut

WASHINGTON D.C. (CNN) - President Barack Obama says congress needs to extend a payroll tax cut. And he is specifically asking republicans to "keep their word to the American people" on not raising taxes.

"I know many Republicans have sworn an oath never to raise taxes as long as they live. How can it be that the only time there's a catch is when it comes to raising taxes on middle-class families," questions President Obama.

The president wants an extension and expansion to the payroll tax cut that will expire at the end of the year.

Some republicans in Congress support the extension but the parties have been split on how to pay for it.
