I-20 closed after three 18-wheelers crash

LONGVIEW,TX (KLTV)- Part of an east Texas interstate is closed for nearly 24 hours after a horrific chain reaction wreck involving three 18-wheelers. Harrison county authorities say late last night around midnight, an 18-wheeler crossed the median at mile marker 599 of I-20, near the Loop 281 intersection, east of Longview,  sending the truck into oncoming traffic. It was a chaotic scene that involved three 18-wheelers and lost cargo scattered all over the westbound roadway that had westbound traffic at a standstill for almost 24 hours.

"The driver of the first 18-wheeler lost control going eastbound, went into the median, and crossed into westbound lanes," says Harrison county state trooper Kirby Jarrell.

The vehicle jack-knifed on an already wet road into oncoming traffic.

"It was already starting to rain at the time, and the roads are usually slick because of the oil that's on the road," Jarrell says.

"We had three trucks, one in the ditch, one crashed into the first one, one ran up in this one, load came out also," says witness Shelly Pazik.

A second 18-wheeler then crashed into the first, and another 18-wheeler narrowly missed the other two, crashing into a ditch.

"Probably the worst I've seen as far as a load being scattered and debris and just the sheer amount," Jarrell says.

As the trucks crashed the cargo each was carrying scattered across the roadway. Everything from bicycles, to picture frames littered the road a stopped traffic dead. 2 drivers were sent to area hospitals but neither according to troopers had non-life threatening injuries.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>
