Deputies walk in on dog fight, 1 arrested

SUMTER COUNTY, SC (WIS) - One man is under arrest after deputies walked in on an active dog fight Wednesday evening.

Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis said deputies were sent to 1565 Pinewood Rd. around 8:20 p.m. to investigate a complaint of dog fighting.

When they arrived at the home, multiple people took off running and drove away in vehicles, Dennis said.

Deputies heard the sound of dogs fighting when they reached the back of the home, they found two pit bull dogs actively fighting. Dennis said it took deputies 40 minutes to get the dogs separated.

Deputies arrested 20-year-old Andy Sharrod Franklin at the scene and charged him with Animal fighting and Baiting, Ill Treatment of Animals and Possession of Marijuana.

Animal Control investigators found bloody rags, medical supply to clean bite wounds, dog graves and skeletons of at least two canines believed to be pit bulls, the sheriff said.

Sheriff's department investigators found other items, such as firearms and narcotics inside the residence, which they believe was being lived in illegally.

Franklin is being held at the Sumter-Lee Detention Center.

The case is still under investigation and additional arrests are expected.
