Authorities: Cat stuffed in backpack, thrown into pond

By Holley Nees

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Animal control officers are now monitoring a cat, reportedly put into a backpack and left to drown in an East Texas pond.

The cat was found Wednesday night in a pond off Ford Chapel Road in Lufkin.

A bird-watcher spotted the backpack after she heard the cats cries.

She then brought the animal ashore and cared for it before police and animal control arrived.

"It was making the most God-awful noise you can imagine. It just pierced right through you," said rescuer Allison Maxwell.

Animal control officers believe the cat is about six to eight months old, and it was wearing a collar, so they believe it was not a stray.

Right now, no one has been arrested.
