Man has minor injuries after semi crashes into ETX home

ATHENS, TX (KLTV) - The crash happened just before eight Thursday morning in the 3,500 block of Highway 31, just east of Athens.

"I got down on my knees putting-kindling the fireplace, fixing to build a fire when it hit," says resident Bobby Thomas.

18-wheels of steel came crashing through his living room--and he was right in the middle of it.

"Glass, brick, and the mantle of the fireplace went right across me," said Thomas.

In the exclusive view from Chopper 7, you can see the path the semi took--leading right to Thomas' house.

Covered in the wreckage of his home and dazed from what appears to be a freak accident, Thomas was alive.

"I couldn't figure out what happened--there was so much stuff there, I couldn't even see the truck," Thomas recalled.

All he could think of was his wife, who was in bed when all of this happened.

"There was a whole wall of stuff across the room between me and the bedrooms. And, I was trying to figure out how to get back to where she was at," he said.

Fortunately, his wife Betty wasn't hurt. And Thomas escaped with minor injures--this tough guy didn't even go to the hospital.

And, by looking at the mangled mess of what used to be a semi, it's a miracle the driver pulled through.

Authorities say the driver had a medical issue. He was taken to an area hospital to be checked-out.

Henderson County officials say no charges have been filed against the driver of the truck.

They also say the truck is being investigated to see if any mechanical problems contributed to the crash.
