East Texas man in ICU after being struck by car

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas senior is in the ICU, nearly 24 hours after he was hit by a minivan.

Gregory Burke, 65, was hit Tuesday night at the intersection of Shiloh Road and Troup Highway.

Gregory Burke lives at Waterton Inn, an assisted living facility not far from where he was hit.

We talked to people who work near the intersection and they said they'd seen Burke cross that street before.

And as we quickly found out, he's not the only one.

Dawn Murphy said she and her son often cross the busy highway when walking to and from Wal-Mart.

"Usually you have to wait for the cars to go by until it is clear and then when it is clear you go across. Then you stay in the middle and wait for those cars to cross and you get to cross then," said Murphy.

Just like authorities said Burke was doing.

"He made it across the first three lanes of the southbound traffic and he was actually struck by a vehicle going southbound in the turn lane," said Tyler Police Department Sgt. Destry Walsworth.

Though Murphy said she and her son never make the trek at night. It's still difficult and dangerous.

"I have managed to cross the street with ease, not all the time but sometimes," said Murphy.

Dawn said she sees other people from her apartment crossing Troup Highway on foot.

And we saw a man cross the street to get to the bus stop.

"A crosswalk would be good," Murphy said.

But for now, she said crossing this highway is a risk she has to take.

Police said Burke will likely be at fault in Tuesday night's accident because he was standing in the middle of the road.
