Charges filed in 'accidental' shooting near UT Tyler

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Charges have now been filed in Tuesday night's apartment shooting in Tyler.

Brandon Willis, 19, of Dallas, who is a student at TJC, is charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of 18-year old Daveon Johnson.

Daveon was shot Tuesday night at the Varsity Place apartments, near the UT Tyler campus.

Police say that right now, they think this shooting may have been a deadly case of show-and-tell.

Daveon Johnson shared apartment 512 with three other men here at Varsity Place.

"They all knew each other. They all lived in the Dallas-area. They grew up together," said ________________

Authorities say Brandon Willis was in the apartment with Johnson and one other roommate. And the gun was in his hand.

"He was showing Johnson, he was kinda re-enacting a shooting he had been involved in," said _______________

Police say Willis did not think the revolver was loaded.

"He pointed a 38 revolver at Johnson, and uh, started pulling the trigger. Apparently there was a round left in the weapon and it discharged," said ___________

That round left Johnson fatally wounded.

Authorities says Johnson was shot once in the upper right back.

Emergency crews soon arrived and began treating Johnson--but he would later die at a Tyler hospital.

Brandon Willis was arrested early Wednesday morning and booked into the Smith County Jail.

"We don't believe it was intentional. That's why he was charged with manslaughter due to the fact that he was reckless," says ______________

Both TJC and UT-Tyler emailed statements to their students about the shooting.

We caught up with one UT-Tyler student who says guns are fine-if they are handled  right.

"It makes me feel good to know there are people with weapons-it does not make me feel good that there are people using them inappropriately," said ___________

Tyler Police say the shooting is still under investigation.
