Family remembers 7- year-old killed in fire

WOOD COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas family remains in a Dallas hospital after they narrowly escaped a fire. Sadly, their 7-year-old daughter did not make it out.

The fire broke out around 11 o'clock Tuesday night, in the 500 block of CR 4536, in Wood County.

Wood County officials say that 7-year-old Jasmine Hammond was in the living room when the fire started.

Timberly Henson says what she'll miss the most is, "The way she could make anyone happy no matter what kind of day you were having."

Around 11 Tuesday night, Perryville Volunteer Firefighters were called out to County Road 4536, where a fire took over the Hammond home.

But only four out of the five family members made it out of the mobile home.

"I heard that it started from the heater in the living room. And Jasmine was asleep on the couch and everyone got out and they were trying to get in there to her, but there was no way in," Timberly expressed.

But the fire  was just too hot. Wood County officials say the family suffered burns to their hands, body and face.

Timberly says her 7-year-cousin was kid who loved to play outside,

"She was the most playful and loud little girl--like off the wall little girl I ever met. It didn't matter who you were she didn't care," says  Timberly.

Jasmine always had a soft spot for her 2-year-old brother, Evan.

"Her little brother, that was her biggest thing. She loved her little brother. I remember when he was born she didn't want anyone to touch him," recalled Timberly.

Timberly, even though the wound is still very fresh, knows Jasmine is in a better place.

Family members are already working on getting another home ready for the Hammond family.

An account under "Jasmine K. Hammond Memorial Fund" has been opened for the family at Mineola Community bank.

You can go to the location in Winnsboro, Grand Saline, Mineola or the Brookshire's in Mineola to donate.
