UPDATE: Tyler Police release identities in fatal shooting

UPDATE 9:39 AM: Tyler police have released the name of the suspect arrested in connection with last night's shooting at Varsity Place Apartments. Brandon Raynard Willis,19, of Dallas was arrested and charged with manslaughter for the shooting death of Daveon Johnson, 18, also of Dallas.

Investigators determined that four young men from the Dallas area, including the two above are leasing an apartment at Varsity Place Apartments. Willis is a current student attending Tyler Junior College and Johnson is a former student of Tyler Junior College.  Three of the roommates were home at the time of the incident.  Investigators were told that Willis had pointed a 38 revolver at Johnson and was explaining how he had been shot in the past.  Willis had pulled the trigger several times thinking the weapon was unloaded when it discharged striking Johnson. 

Johnson was shot in the upper rights side of his back and was pronounced dead at East Texas Medical Center at 8:08 p.m.  An autopsy will be performed at Southeast Forensics.    

UPDATE 5:54 AM: Tyler police have arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting near the UT Campus. Police cannot confirm if the suspect under arrest is the shooter in the case. Police also cannot confirm the charges the suspect faces.

UPDATE 9:50 PM: Tyler Police are on the scene of a fatal shooting near the UT Tyler Campus.  Tonight, officers were called to the Varsity Place Apartments on Varsity Drive.  Right now details are still coming in, but we're told around 7:30, a 19 year old black male was found shot in one of the apartments.  He was taken to a local hospital where police say he died from  his injuries.     

Police are interviewing people at the scene and crime scene investigators have arrived.  So far, the victim's name has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.  Police are looking at possible suspects, but right now, they say no arrests have been made.   

ORIGINAL POST 8:35 p.m.- Tonight, Tyler Police are investigating a shooting at the Varsity Place apartments near the UT Tyler campus.

Details are still coming in, but people on the scene say that one person was shot and killed around 8pm Tuesday night.

So far, that person's name has not been released.

Crime scene investigators have arrived at the apartments.

We will have more updates on this developing story as soon as they become available.



Statement released by Tyler Junior College:

Last night, a former student of Tyler Junior College was among a group of friends visiting at a Tyler apartment complex when a tragic accident occurred.

The former student, Daveon Donte Johnson, was killed by the accidental discharge of a handgun. A current student of TJC, Brandon Raynard Willis, has been arrested and charged with manslaughter, a second-degree felony.

According to a statement released by the Tyler Police Department this morning, the death occurred as the result of a demonstration with a handgun believed to be not loaded. The statement indicated the young men were roommates at the apartment complex.

 We are saddened for the loss of life and the devastating affect this has had on the others involved. Our hearts go out to these young men, their friends and families. We ask that our entire college community keep these families in their thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
