Vehicle crashes into ETX gas station

TYLER (KLTV) – Police say a man dozed off behind the wheel and crashed in to a Tyler gas station over the weekend.

The crash happened just before 3 a.m. Sunday on Gentry Parkway and Ross Ave.

"The gas pumps were totally uprooted and they flew from this side to the glass windows, then moved to the other side," said Mohd Nayeen, the gas station clerk.

"I was here at the back of the gas station, that's where I sleep at, and all at once I heard a big explosion and I thought it was way over the other way," said Arcellious Fortson, who lives behind the gas station.

Surveillance video from inside the store shows the ice cream freezer slide across the floor when the gas pumps hit the window.

"I look in the front and one tow truck had the truck on it, and the other had the motor on it," said Fortson.

Police said the driver, 26-year-old Christopher Combs, admitted to falling asleep behind the wheel.

He was taken to a Tyler hospital, treated and released.

The clerk had just closed the store and was minutes from heading outside where he said he could have been seriously injured.

"There is just a right time of calculation, even a wrong time of calculation, and I was going to be totally smashed, thank God," Nayeen said.

And others who were around said they feel just as blessed.

"The man fell asleep behind the steering wheel and he's still alive, and I am too. God got his hands on him and me both, we're miracle people," said Fortson.

As for the store, it's up and running today. You can't exactly buy gas yet, but the owner said they're working on that.

"Might take a month or so," he said.

They said right now, they're just thankful no one was killed, nothing caught fire and all the damage can be fixed.

"Insurance will pay for each and everything, maybe, but there is no insurance for life and we should be thankful," said Nayeen.

Officials say they have not determined whether or not alcohol played a role in the wreck.

They are currently waiting on blood test results from the hospital.
