There are new details about a fatal shooting that happened Thursday in Vidalia involving a police officer.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said that around 1 a.m. Thursday, people started fighting at an American Legion Post.

Witnesses told WTOC that someone hit Trey Hunter in the face so he went to his car and got a gun. They said Hunter was shooting into the air and that when the police got there an officer shot him in the head.

A GBI representative said someone shot at the officer and he was forced to open fire.  When investigators got there, multiple people were firing guns, according to the GBI.

Hunter's family is set to hold a funeral for the young man starting at 3 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Phillips Temple Church of God in Vidalia. To help the family with funeral costs, donate to the Trey Hunter Burial Fund at any BB&T Bank.
