Driver identified in accident that left 4-year-old ETX boy dead

Cesar Cruz at one-year-old Cesar Cruz at one-year-old

GREGG COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - The driver of the vehicle that hit and killed a 4-year-old boy a week ago today, has been identified.

Margarito Salinas Aguilar, 56, has been identified as the driver in the accident that lead to the death of 4-year-old Cesar Cruz.

Drivers license info shows Aguilar is from Tatum, but is currently living in Longview.

We caught up with Aguilar as he was going into an hour long meeting with his attorney and an interpreter, and the Gregg County District Attorney.

DPS says the gray or silver Dodge Durango is the vehicle that hit Cruz. DPS says the vehicle was parked behind the house where Aguilar was living. Officials say Aguilar told a third party that he thought he may have hit a deer last Monday night on Highway 149 in Gregg County. That person took the DPS vehicle description and Aguilar's story and contacted authorities. DPS made contact with Aguilar last Thursday.

At this time, Aguilar is not charged. Aguilar may be charged with driving with an expired license, a suspended license, and failure to maintain financial responsibility (no insurance), DPS says.

Officials also say Aguilar is distraught and devastated.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
