ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A Diboll man has been arrested for driving down U.S. 59 with his wife on top of his vehicle.

Arthur Davis Brown, 34, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The Angelina County Sheriff's Office is investigating the case. Authorities say Brown was driving at high speeds on U.S. 59 with his wife, Candice Batiste Brown, on top of his vehicle. The woman was taken by helicopter to a Tyler hospital, where she is being treated for serious injuries after she fell off the vehicle. Inv. Seth Stover said she is listed in fair condition.

Sheriff Kent Henson said Brown went to his estranged wife's house and at some point, their child ended up in his vehicle.

Henson said the man called 911 and mentioned something about a disturbance with his wife. The dispatcher asked him if she was in the car with him and he told her, "No, my wife's on the car."

Henson said it was about that time the woman fell off the vehicle, near the intersection of Airport Road.

The man kept driving and was eventually stopped by Lufkin Police on Feagin Drive, Henson said.

Police detained the man Wednesday night for questioning.

Stover said Arthur Brown was with his wife in Houston with the child and they ran into marital problems and the husband left town with their young son.

The wife called her father, Camille Howard Batiste, who picked her up in Houston and brought her back to her residence on Morris Road in Diboll. The father's car was at the residence, but he did not have a key, because it was in his daughter's jacket, which was in the Cadillac that Arthur Brown was driving.

Stover said Batiste had called a locksmith to the house and he had left his daughter at the residence to meet the locksmith at the end of the road. When Batiste and the locksmith returned to the residence, they saw Arthur Brown driving away with his wife hanging on to the trunk of the car, Stover said.

Batiste and the locksmith followed Brown to U.S. 59. That's when Brown called 911 to report that his wife was on the back of the car and his father-in-law was trying to stop him, Stover said.

Stover said the dispatcher kept telling him to stop, and he had almost stopped when Batiste pulled up next to him. Brown then sped up and his wife lost her grip and fell off, Stover said.

The locksmith continued to follow Brown until police stopped him on Feagin Drive, Stover said.

Stover said it appears Brown was driving between 30 and 40 miles per hour.
