Looking for a better job? Here's where you can find one

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - The economy is first and foremost on a lot of people's minds right now, especially if you're on of the approximately 8% of East Texans who are out of work.

For East Texans on the job hunt, KLTV is hosting the second of its two semi-annual job fairs today from 10 am to 1 pm at the Maude Cobb Convention Center in Longview.

Hallsville ISD is just one of 22 potential employers at today's fair.

"We need bus drivers. We've had drivers that have had to go run their route and then come back and run a second route, which makes kids late getting home in the evening, throws family time off and that kind of stuff," says Dr. Brian Morris, Executive Director of Operations for Hallsville ISD.

To become a bus driver, you need a commercial driver's license with both a "P" and an "S" endorsement. You must pass a drug test and physical and a written and driving test at a DPS office.

"It's a great job for, you know, maybe the kids are in school now and someone just wants to make a little extra money, drive a route in the morning, in the afternoon, have time off during the day to run errands, what have you, or there may be other areas in the district where we may have opportunities for people to be employed and they can combine those two situations," says Morris.

Hallsville ISD is also looking for custodial and food service help.

"We've got a brand new high school being built, scheduled to be completed in May, and it's almost 400,000 square feet, and we're going to have to have custodians, we're going to have to have some maintenance and grounds personnel," Morris says.

Nabors Drilling USA operates 33 land drilling rigs in East Texas. They're mostly looking to hire entry-level floorhands.

"We're going to look for a good steady work background," says Tom Larkin, HR Manager of Nabors' Tyler office. "So in other words, if you come to us and you've got a couple of years at each of your previous positions, you show stability and you're not job-hopping, then you'd be a good candidate for us."

The position includes a lot of standing and walking, climbing and cleaning the rigs, and a lot of time spent outdoors in the elements. On the other hand, the job is well-paid, and with a seven day on, seven day off schedule, you're essentially off for half the year.

And with so many organizations represented, there's something right up everyone's alley.

"We went after government organizations, we're going to have city presence in here, we're going to have educational sector here, we're going to have oil industries, we're going to have manufacturing industries, so again, you're going to have such a broad, broad industries here," said KLTV's Iurie Corjos.
