Multiple charges filed in Anderson Co. DWI wrecks

ANDERSON COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A series of suspected drunk driving crashes has killed one, hospitalized four and even damaged a rescue helicopter.

Erik Green of Arlington is charged with intoxication manslaughter.

Green allegedly collided with an SUV early Sunday on Highway 287 in Elkhart.

One person was killed in that wreck, which became even more dangerous after crews arrived on the scene.

As an emergency helicopter was trying to rush a victim of an alleged drunk driving crash, authorities say another drunk driver slammed in that helicopter.

First responders say they simply could not believe it.

Raymond Thompson, an Elkhart Volunteer Firefighter says, "It's just something that's happening in front of you, but you just don't believe that it's happening."

Thompson says he watched in disbelief as a car sped past the barricades around the crash site.

Matthew Mitchell plowed into the medical helicopter. He's charged with DWI and having an open container.

Chaplin Barney Walker was called to the scene to comfort distraught victims and neighbors, and to pray with first responders.

He says a crew member in the medical chopper described to him what happened.

"They explained to me that the car had come under that right rear fen and lifted the helicopter as the tail fen hit the windshield of that vehicle and scratched across the top of the vehicle, and then there was a sudden push up," says Walker.

Thompson says he couldn't believe it was happening.

Monday morning, authorities towed the helicopter to Corsicana for repairs.

We're told the suspected drunk driver who hit the medical chopper had one passenger who was charged with public intoxication.
