Mineola man hit by car, survives

MINEOLA, TX (KLTV) - Mineola officials say no charges will be filed against the couple who hit an East Texas man with their car.

Willie Rigsbay, 29, was struck by a car Friday night on East McDonald Street in Mineola.

Police say Rigsbay was trying to wave a car down when he was hit.

Mineola Police rushed to East McDonald street, Friday evening after a couple accidentally hit 29-year old Willie Rigsby with their car.

"They were eastbound on [highway] 49 heading back into town when they came over the hill. They didn't see him and hit him," says Capt. Joyce Box, Mineola Police Department.

Officials say his attention was on another vehicle that was coming out from Inwood onto McDonald street, when Rigsbay took off screaming and chasing behind a vehicle, stepping out from Inwood onto McDonald street.

"It was a total accident. There's nothing they could do about it. He was out in a roadway and there's a hill there, and when they topped the hill, they didn't see him and there were witnesses there also," says Box.

One witness, who did not want his identity revealed, said he was there when authorities arrived and saw Rigsbay lying next to the road.

"I saw him face down where the blood is his feet were towards the road," says unidentified witness.

And says another car almost hit Rigsbay, but was able to swerve out of the way just in time.

"I think he just got onto the road, but the first vehicle missed him and the second one got him. So it's easy enough to do especially with this hill,"unidentified witness.

Rigsbay was taken to a hospital in Tyler, where he was treated for serious head injuries.

Rigsbay's wife who says he was able to come home Monday from the hospital, and is expected to make a full recovery.
