There's still time to buy those holiday airline tickets

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - With the holiday season now only 10 days out, there are limitations regarding your holiday air travel -- but they all revolve around the price you're willing to pay for those airline tickets. It turns out that if you're willing to pay quite a bit or scrounge around for deals, you really do have some time left to purchase those tickets -- even for Thanksgiving.

"Book your flight from T-Y-R to your destination. It's a good way to save a little money and a lot of time," said Davis Dickson, Manager of the Tyler Pounds Regional Airport.

Dickson says that's because you aren't spending the money to drive to a larger airport or paying more money for parking or for a hotel.

He also offered additional travel advice for people coming through the Tyler airport this holiday season.

"Make sure you pack as light as you can. One thing that we recommend also is try to get here between 45 minutes and an hour ahead of your flight time. It gives you plenty of time to check in," Dickson said.

And believe it or not, there's still time to buy your holiday airfare.

"Six to eight weeks out is probably not the best time to buy airfare. At about four weeks out, there is a little bit of what we call a 'sweet spot,' where airfare does tend to soften a little bit, and then airfare tends to go up again about two weeks before your flight," said Gabe Saglie of Travelzoo.

But that doesn't mean you're out of luck for Thanksgiving travel.

"Airlines will release, usually on Tuesdays, reduced airfare for later that week or into that weekend," said Saglie.

Sign up for deal alerts from airline and travel sites and "like" your favorite airlines on their social media pages, because those great deals usually last only 24 to 48 hours.

And you've got to be flexible with your travel dates and times to take advantage of those last-minute deals.

"Typically what we see are flights are booked heavy year-round, but especially during the holidays. Make sure you get here early," Dickson said.

The cheapest days to travel over the holidays are actually Thanksgiving and Christmas days and the most expensive days are the days right before and right after the holidays.
