Longview ministry gives coats to kids

LONGVIEW,TX (KLTV)- A Longview ministry meets the need of parents looking for winter clothing through their yearly drive called coats for kids. With the chill of winter just around the corner, families struggling financially, again have to worry about warm clothing for their children. For Gregg county families in need, the Longview community ministries coats for kids program is a chance get winter clothing they couldn't ordinarily afford.

"Its very important for all those people I think, you can take pretty coat for the child," says mother of two Ernestina Sampallo.

In these tough economic times, workers see people coming in with desperate stories.

"They come the need food, they need help with utilities they need help with clothes," says coats for kids organizer Lisa Simmons.

For families, the giveaway means they don't have to make a tough choice.

"Winter coats are very expensive this opportunity is very good for families," Sampallo says.

"It gives them the advantage of coming in and not having to spend a lot of money on their kids to give them a winter coat, last year we gave out over a thousand coats so its great benefit to the community, a lot of these families they have 3 or 4 kids with 3 or 4 kids buying coats could take away from food bills and everything else," Simmons says.

"Parents you know your kids outgrow clothes if you have multiple kids, you can't keep those kids in clothes, you see the faces of those kids when they leave here, that's worth coming to see and being a part of it," says event volunteer Greg Adams.

All coats and clothing that were not given away today will go back to Longview community ministries, to be distributed to other charities or given away as needed.
