Teen stole school bus to visit family

MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - A Madison County teen has been arrested for stealing a bus after his family tipped off police.

Madison County investigators say the 17-year-old boy stole the bus from a parking lot near Madison County High School in Gurley and drove it to Scottsboro where he parked it in a church parking lot.

Investigators say the teen visited family after dropping off the bus. After his family saw the report of the missing bus on WAFF 48 News Monday night, they called Scottsboro Police.

Scottsboro officials got in touch with Madison County Sheriff's Department and reported the theft. They arrested the teen for stealing the bus and charged him with first degree theft, which is a Class B Felony.

Authorities say it was a crime of opportunity and the suspect took the bus because he wanted to see family in Jackson County.
