Streets Of Speed: Houston Street: Nearly Every Driver Speeds
The speed limit is 30 miles per hour. Drivers though didn't seem to pay much attention, but we did.
"Coming over this hill to the right, sometimes they're zooming much faster than the speed limit," Margaret Martin, area resident, said.
For the past 50 years, Martin has lived on Horseshoe Drive, near the corner of Houston Street, where she says the speeders are.
"Kids are using this route to come in to the college," Martin said, "and they're running late before their 8 o'clock class."
Martin says she doesn't try to cross the street to get to the golf course anymore.
"Now, I try to stay on Horseshoe Drive just to save my life," Martin said.
Most speeders we caught were going at least 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit, which was about 40 to 45 miles an hour. Some were going much faster. The record speed we clocked today: 65. That's more than twice the speed limit in this area.
