Kilgore hosts charity classic car show

KILGORE, TX (KLTV)- An effort to help families and their children have a joyous Christmas kicked off Saturday in Kilgore with a classic car show. Ordinary citizens banded together to raise money for their neighbors, in an event called 'cruisin cars for kids'. From classic Fords and Buick's, to sleek thunderbirds, the Gabriel Jordan Buick GMC lot, had a much different look in a charity event.

"Its getting Christmas there are kids out there that are in need and we as a community feel we have a responsibility to those kids" said Gabriel Jordan manager Tim Capps.

Made up of ordinary citizens, no organizations, this group from Kilgore has taken it upon themselves to make Christmas a better time for families in need, and more important, to make sure kids get toys for Christmas.

"Because there are so many in the community that just doesn't have enough for Christmas and anything we can do to help out is just wonderful we all need to help out what we can," says event supporter Michelle Shadowen.

"We've got kids in the community and children in the community that's not getting nothing for Christmas we feel like its a need to help these folks," says event co-sponsor Joe Garner.

All proceeds, from entry fees, to auction items, go to buy food and toys for needy children.

"There's people that don't get to eat at Christmas, we're trying to raise money so they can eat," Garner says.

"There is always a desperate need throughout our communities top help serve people we don't do that very well sometimes" Capps says.

And a heartfelt message for all East Texans.

"Wherever you are look for places you can drop toys off so that kids can have a Christmas," says Capp.

Toy donations can be made at Gabriel Jordan Buick GMC in Kilgore. They are located on Highway 259 on the 1,500 block.
