Quick Response Saves Building From Fire

A grass fire just outside Tyler's city limits had firefighters scrambling Sunday.

The Tyler Fire Department was called to the area located on Hwy 271 just across the street from Goolsbee Tires and Service around 1:00 p.m..

Five trucks were called to the scene because of the amount of smoke billowing up from the blaze. It turns out that smoke was from some old tires that were burning, and the fire was fairly small.

While small, District Fire Chief Robert Dear said a building was in danger.

"It looked rather bad because there were so many tires burning it looked like some structures were on fire so we called a 2nd alarm and we controlled it in about 20 minutes and saved the building up there."

Firefighters had to run a 1,000 ft Supply line because the fire was just outside the city limits and there were no fire hydrants close by. The fire was started by the landowners son who was trying to clear some brush.

There were no injuries and only minimal damage to property.
