UPADATE: Student in custody after taking school truck for joyride

UPDATE: School officials have confirmed an Ore City High School student is in custody after stealing a maintenance vehicle from the school's campus.

According to Ore City ISD superintendent Lynn Heflin, a school maintenance man had left the keys in the vehicle while he stepped inside the school for a moment.

While he was away, a seventeen-year-old male hopped in and took the truck out for a joyride lasting more than ten hours.

School officials called police around 9:45 am who ended up tracking the student down late that evening, however administrators say the student refused to pull over.

Administrators say the chase ended when the student crashed the school's truck into a tree, totaling it.

Heflin says the district's insurance has the truck covered, but as of right now, he is not sure if the student has insurance or not.

The teenager remains in custody this afternoon awaiting disciplinary action.

Heflin says never in his 35 years of education has he experienced something like this before.
