CAUGHT ON TAPE: Ammunition explodes during car fire

Posted: Updated:

KILGORE, TX (KLTV) - Crews had to avoid fire and bullets to save an East Texas driver, trapped in his burning car.

And the rescue was caught on tape.

KLTV 7 obtained the police dashcam video from Wednesday morning, when the car overturned on Danville Road in Kilgore.

Christopher Chadwick, 23, was trapped inside when the car started to catch fire.

While crews were trying to free him, ammunition stored in the trunk started to explode.

Police doused the fire with fire extinguishers, allowing EMT's to get Chadwick from the wreckage and take him to the hospital.

Lt. Roman Roberson of the Kilgore Police says, "They continued to try and get him out of the vehicle. Police officers took action with some fire extinguishers we carry in our vehicles and actually kept the fire under control until fire and rescue could arrive on scene."

Christopher Chadwick remains hospitalized in fair condition.
