TYLER, TX (KLTV) -East Texas students are working together to raise donations for care packages for troops in Afghanistan. They said they plan to send the packages in time for Christmas this year.

For Lori Amaya, who is the mother of two sons in the military, sending care packages in time for Christmas is a must.

"Christmas morning for them is not going to be like Christmas morning for us in the United States. We don't know what could be going on, they could be fighting, they could be wounded and this way they know we're thinking of them an honor their service," said Lori Amaya, collecting donations.

To make sure troops overseas knew they aren't forgotten Lori started collecting items from her students for care packages.

"We know that they don't have the things that we have because they're in Afghanistan so we want to try and help them out," said Skylar Epperson, bringing in donations.

"They're fighting for us and if it wasn't for them we wouldn't have our freedom," said Chaquel Ford, bringing in donations.

Last year the students at Hubbard Middle School collected about 330 care packages for troops in Afghanistan. They sent everything from cookies, socks, magazines, but most importantly letters.

"To hear news from home, current news to know that middle schoolers are thinking of them and honor their service and wish them well," said Lori.

Lori says they plan to send the care packages around the first week of December, so they get there in time for Christmas.

They will be collecting white athletic socks, sunflower seeds, cookies, gum, jerky, magazines, hard candy, flavored drink mixes for water and letters.

Donations can be made at Hubbard Middle School, Bullard High School and Brook Hill School.

These schools will be accepting donations until November 14th.
