Volunteer fire crews talk budget with Smith County commissioners

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Their finances were already pushed to the limit and then the wildfires broke out. Now, some fire crews that battled the flames are pushing for things to change.

Commissioners are addressing a long list of complaints, mostly financial, that volunteer fire crews have with the current Emergency Services District Board.  And now, that board has 60 days.

"This order gives them 60 days to look at it, get it back to the commissioners court with a recommendation of what they plan to do to rectify the deficiencies," said Smith County Commissioner Terry Phillips.

Commissioners also appointed Bill Bellenfant to the E.S.D. Board.  Due to his extensive background as a financial advisor for several hospitals, fire crews are happy to have him on-board. But he says it's not just about money.

"Our number one goal is to safeguard human life. And, our second goal is to safeguard property," said Bellenfant.
