9 year old killed crossing street

ANDERSON COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A nine-year-old girl was killed while trying to cross the street after buying a soda.

Tyrana Whitt of Palestine was hit a by a car near her home just outside of Palestine on FM 322 Saturday morning. She died Sunday at a Dallas hospital.

Tuesday morning, Tyrana's family set-up a memorial in her memory. On the advice of the family's attorney, they declined to talk about Tyrana on-camera. They did say Tyrana was very bright and loved anything computer related.

Brenda Rotondo, who was Tyrana's neighbor and school bus driver, says the crash has devastated the community.

"She was lively she was running and playing with the kids and she liked to help me cook. When she came over one and time and I was cooking, she said, Miss Brenda can I help you cook and I said you can stir," said Rotondo.

She says these past few days have been difficult on the neighborhood, and the other children.

"I took her nametag and hung it up over my mirror on the bus because I don't intend for her to be forgotten. So, she's riding with us still as far as I'm concerned. I just a need a picture to put by it," said Rotondo.

Palestine ISD says there are grief counselors available if students need them at Southside Elementary School where Tyrana was a third grader.

Funeral arrangements for Tyrana are pending.
