UPDATE: Halloween hay ride turns deadly in East Texas

MT. VERNON, TX (KLTV)- Family members did not want to talk on camera, but say Alton Walker Jr. died doing what he enjoyed- having fun with the holidays and trying to make kids smile.

Alton, who friends and family called Buck, decided to help out with Mount Vernon's annual Halloween hay ride through the town's cemetery.

"We had a hay ride that went at the haunted house to the cemetery where there were actors up there to kind of scare the kids and have a good time with Halloween," says Franklin Co. Sheriff, Paul Fletcher.

Everyone was having a good time until Buck lost his footing.

"The trailer was being pulled by a tractor going very slowly through the cemetery and people would run up and scare the kids. It was kind of a downhill slope, it got slippery, and he tripped where the grass came up to the concrete. He fell forward and hit the trailer and the trailer rolled over him," says Sheriff Fletcher.

Mt. Vernon resident, Sid Leslie, has lived across from the cemetery for several years.

"This whole street was lined with emergency vehicles. I was just wondering what was happening; I was concerned. What's this going on across the street from my house on Halloween night in a cemetery?" he questioned.

The driver stopped when he realized what had happened and called 9-1-1. Buck was taken to a Mt. Vernon hospital, but died a short time later.

"I've been in law enforcement since 1974, and I've never seen anything as bizarre as this happening," Sheriff Fletcher says.

Off camera, Buck's family says he lived life to the fullest and had a heart for people... something they say they will never forget.
