UT Tyler victim in scam

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The University of Texas at Tyler is victim in a scam targeting four Texas colleges.

A 48-year-old Dallas man stole an identity and faked being a college student to get loans.

Solomen Hobbs Jr. also knows as Virgil Clinton Powell must repay more than $37,000 in student loans. He pleaded guilty to three counts of wire fraud, three counts of student assistance program fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft.

Investigators say he has been using someone else's name since 2004 and never planned to use the money for school.

The other universities targeted are: The University of Texas at El Paso, the University of Texas at Arlington, Midwestern State University and Texas State University.

UT Tyler issued this statement:

"UT Tyler worked with the Department of Education concerning this case. No funds will be repaid to the university as we only certified eligibility for loans based on enrollment at the time."
