TJC students beat the drum!

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - It is homecoming week at Tyler Junior College and there is a unique homecoming tradition going on before the game even starts.

Students at TJC beat a drum non-stop from 8:00 am Monday until kickoff on Saturday. According to the tradition, if the drum stops beating even once during this time the Apaches will lose the game.

TJC band Drum Major, Joshua Swanigan doesn't just buy into the homecoming drum tradition,  he believes in it so much that he signed up to beat the drum at 8:00 am Monday morning.

The tradition is that the drum beat has to be hitting constant with no breaks from the Monday before homecoming at 8:00 until the ball's kicked off on Saturday at the game, 24/7, even overnight, somebody has to be there, banging the drum.

TJC Director of Student Success, Vincent Nguyen says the tradition dates back all the way to 1948, during TJC's first football season, but that each year students take ownership of the tradition in new and different ways.
