Four People Injured In Crash

Highway 31 was closed off this afternoon and traffic was backed up for a couple of hours after a two-car crash. It happened near the Smith County-Gregg County line. Four people, including a baby, were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. DPS tells us a Chevy Malibu was apparently trying to make a U-turn, when a truck pulling a trailer with a bulldozer came over the hill. Officers say the driver of the truck says he could not stop in time to avoid hitting the Malibu. The driver and passenger of the Malibu were ejected from the car through the back window. The truck skidded off the road and into the woods.

"As he comes over, the driver said that he didn't have anywhere to go, and of course, he struck her in the passenger side of the car," Trooper Cody Mitcham, Department of Public Safety, said.

The baby was airlifted to a local hospital. The three others involved were taken by ambulance. No charges have been filed in the accident. The road has been cleaned up and traffic is now allowed through.
