Woman Faces Three Counts Of Animal Cruelty

Julia McMurrey, the founder of the animal rescue shelter, Paws Across the Planet, was arrested and charged with animal cruelty back in September. Today, she was arrested again. Just over a year ago, McMurrey opened up the shelter. She said she was an animal lover and dedicated her life to caring for nearly 200 dogs. But back in September, investigators discovered the dogs living in filth.

"The conditions were just terrible," Smith County Constable Charles Wilson said.

Veterinarians said some were tick infested, had mange, and were forced to drink dirty, rat-infested water. Smith County authorities arrested McMurrey on September 11, on one count of animal cruelty. She got out on bond. The Dallas SPCA came in and seized all 198 dogs.

"We felt like that she just had too many dogs and couldn't handle them by herself," Wilson said.

After months of investigation, authorities arrested McMurrey again, today. They say she had failed to follow orders to get three of the dogs necessary medical attention.

"We have looked at these three animals, and they were so seriously, badly infected with sores and mange and in such bad shape," Wilson said.

McMurrey appeared in court this morning and now faces three more counts of animal cruelty. She is now out on $3,000 bond.
