Fall bar-b-que held for Longview homeless

LONGVIEW,TX (KLTV)- A beautiful day for being outside, and in Longview there was a bar-b-que held for the homeless and those in rescue shelters. A company came forward to foot the bill for the day which gave the less fortunate a chance to just enjoy a simple day of food and fun. Games, blue-grass music and bar-b-que. All on tap for the homeless today at the highway 80 rescue mission in Longview.

"Man its really great to know that there are people out here that come and do stuff for the community, there's a lot of people out here that don't have a whole lot, me myself I highly appreciate it," says shelter resident Jay White.

Longview's Dana corporation footed the bill for the day, which gave the less fortunate a chance to just enjoy a simple day of relaxation.

"We've branched out to try to help our community, we wanted to show we were partners with the community not just a manufacturing facility we wanted to give back to the city," says Dana corp representative Kelly Moore.

The men's and women's shelter continue to see people come in with no money and no job prospects.

"The economy has some effect but its also about giving people tools, so a lot of times when we're looking at the economy , we're looking at one person at a time," says highway 80 mission director Eric Burger.

Around 300 people turned out for the event, all looking for something to lift their spirits.

"Sometimes you need to take a break form the fact that you don't have a job, this is an opportunity to take that break," Burger says.

More than just a good time, it was hope for those who desperately need it.

"People have lost jobs, situations with collapse of the family its not just one thing its all kinds of issues we're dealing with , and we're here to help them make a change in their life," says Burger.

Though homeless numbers have decreased slightly since summer, rescue mission workers say highway 80 and the women's shelter remain at maximum capacity for guests.
