Local Retail Sales Up

Up and down South Broadway in Tyler are local "mom and pop" stores. The parking lots are not so crowded. That's because a lot of stores aren't even open today. Their owners are still on Christmas vacation. But for stores that are open the day after Christmas, parking lots tended to be full, like at Don's TV & Appliance, where this year's sales have exceeded last year's by about $100,000. And the merchandising manager says people are more willing to buy high-priced electronics.

"Hottest items have been DVD/VCR combinations, small televisions with the DVD/VCR built into them, and then just regular DVD players by themselves," Chris Smith said.

At Spinout in Bergfeld Center, sales have also been brisk.

"I decided to open up because we did have a lot of things that I felt like the younger girls, the college girls, that would be shopping the day after Christmas to spend their Christmas money, would probably come in and possibly spend here." Diane Bunker, owner of the high-end young women's clothing store, said.

She says in-store items and gift certificates have sold well this holiday, the best season since 9-11. The hottest fashion items: personalized accessories.

"Anything with initials are just hot and will be hot all the way through spring and summer. So we have a lot of initial items, from T-shirts to purses and necklaces" Bunker said.

She feels news about the improving economy have boosted consumer confidence in general.

One other store in Tyler, The Gift Box, says its sales were down this holiday season.

At this time last year, a guy by the name of Dak Prescott was still on the draft board. In fact, the Mississippi State star didn't hear his named called until Saturday during the fourth round. Luckily for the Cowboys, Prescott turned out to be the hidden gem of the 2016 draft class. The NFL AP rookie of the year was in Longview Friday night for a fundraiser supporting the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Big Pines.
