Kitchen Queen Paula Deen signing books in Tyler

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Southern-cooking lovers gathered in Tyler all day to meet television chef Paula Deen.

Deen is in town to sign copies of her new book, "Paula Deen's Southern Cooking Bible: The New Classic Guide to Delicious Dishes with More Than 300 Recipes."

Charlotte Pena drove in all the way from Lindale at 6 a.m. to meet her hero and have a book signed.

"I bought two books. One I'll cook with and one I'll never touch so that I don't hurt it," she said.

Pena's at the front of a six hundred person line. Tickets have been handed out, and each person gets one book signed.

Despite some strict rules -- no personal photography, no extra books or memorabilia signed -- people like Sherryl Wigley drove from long distances to meet Ms. Deen.

"My sister's birthday is tomorrow, and when we found out Paula Deen is here, she is a bigger fan than I am, so I said we've got to do this for her birthday," Wigley said.

Janet Shuttlesworth and her girlfriends are here, too. They took a trip to Savannah to visit Deen's restaurants this summer, but the closest they got to Paula was a cardboard cutout.

"I'm just excited to actually put my real eyes on her body instead of just seeing her on TV or on the front or the back of a book," Shuttlesworth said.

Paula Deen has a remarkable success story, but even she sometimes can't believe it.

She shared that in an interview last year with our Raycom sister station in Savannah.

"Dreams can come true if you're willing to work and make some sacrifices," she said at the opening of the Paula Deen School in Savannah in April 2010.

And that's one of the reasons 24 year-old Katie Simmons loves Paula Deen.

"Why do I love her? I love that she has Southern pride, I love that she's a businesswoman, I love that she's made a name for herself, I love her southern drawl. She's just ... I love her," she said.
