This past week, Smith County failed another inspection by the Commission on Jail Standards. The commissioners court has spent weeks discussing options to relieve the problem and decided today to hire a consultant to help. The court also discussed the concern of Sheriff J.B. Smith signing the federal contract to house prisoners. The court feels it's not legal for the sheriff to enter the county into a contract. Court attorney Keith Downs says, in his opinion, the sheriff was in the right. The court deferred the final say to the Texas Attorney General.
