TISD officials to present plan for growth tonight

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The future of your child's education is the topic of conversation Thursday night in Tyler.

Tyler ISD officials will present the first draft of their long-term growth plan to their school board.

TISD Superintendent Dr. Randy Reid says this meeting is important to provide the school board a structure for a future plan.

Tyler ISD officials are dealing with growing pains. The district is now working on the best ways to address the projected growth the district will face in the next decade.

"We have about 2,500 more students that are projected to be in our district over the next nine years, and we're trying to prepare for that. We're trying to be ready for them both facility-wise as well as academic programming," says Reid.

While this plan isn't definite yet, five ideas have been presented in the community over the last few months for consideration, chief among them building new facilities for the current high schools and creating new intermediate campuses.

"If that is a part of the final plan, we would take the fifth graders out of the elementary schools and the sixth graders out of the middle schools to create those intermediate campuses," Reid explained.

TISD parent Stephanie Taylor thinks that idea is a good one, "I also think that would make a good transition for the children who are going to middle school who might not yet be ready. There's a big gap between an 11-year old and a 13-year old."

Another big consideration--creating a technology center that would house a magnet school for current Robert E. Lee and John Tyler high school students.

While new facilities are under consideration, Dr. Reid says there wouldn't be enough students or financial support to create a third high school right now.

Again, the meeting starts at 7 p.m. Public comment will be open and school officials encourage community members to share their thoughts about the plan.
