Long waits for foundation repairs, drought to blame

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - The Texas drought has caused all types of problems. For months, the number of home foundation repairs has continued to climb. Repair companies say they are so slammed with work, they're on backlog.

To repair half inch cracks, it's quite a process and expensive. A particular job at a Longview home is costing the homeowner about $10,000. Troy Simonsen with Abry Brothers says you can blame the drought.

"The soil is extremely hard. They break a lot of shovels right now. It's probably twice as hard to dig now as normal," said Simonsen.

As workers raise the foundation, the home's cracks began to close. The demand for this type of work is at a record high. Simonsen says customers across multiple states are having to wait.

"To the middle of December, which is a long time for us," he said. "This is absolutely the worst, yea this is drought cause. A lot of days of hundred degree weather and it's just very dry and clay shrinks when it dries up."

In the meantime of waiting for repairs or even trying to avoid the cracks, he says a soaker hose will help. Your water bill may be higher, but your home could stay intact a little longer.

Repairs generally cost anywhere from $6,000 to $11,000.  The longer you wait, the more costlier it can be.
