Marine welcomed home in Longview

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV)- A weary east Texas warrior returns from duty in Afghanistan, to a heroes welcome. With welcome home soldier and patriot guard members on hand, marine corporal Cullen Mauritzen was given a noisy reception in his hometown of Longview.

"Oh my goodness I am just so very proud of him and just so thankful to have him back whole and thankful for what he's done for us its wonderful," says mother Jackie Mauritzen.

"Its a little overwhelming , its great the people welcome me back, soldiers , troops marines back and everything, its really good to get a warm reception," Cullen says.

The corporal had spent 7 months in Afghanistan , 1st battalion 5th marines, and saw his fellow marines pay the price of service.

"At the same time its kind of hard I have quite a few brothers that didn't make it back you know it just makes it difficult thinking about that, you think about their families and what they're going through right now," says Cullen.

"It was a trying time and we relied on a lot of prayer and friends praying for him and that's what kept us going," Jackie says.

His parents say Cullen's service is shows his true character.

"Its pretty awesome to think of what he's accomplished in this amount of time," says Jackie.

Like a true marine, Cullen does not see himself as a hero.

"In wars past people didn't get the welcome home, so its nice to know that the American people appreciate it," says Cullen.

Mauritzen does not know whether he will be returning for duty in Afghanistan yet.
