Child Seat Dangers During Winter

When temperatures begin to drop, parents bring out the coats and sweaters to keep their kids warm but that bulky clothing could be putting them in danger when riding in the car. Department of Public Safety trooper, Jean Steely, says up to 90 % of parents make at least one mistake when securing children in a car seat and in the wintertime that number only increases. She says the bulky clothing makes the parents adjust the safety harnesses, most of the time incorrectly.
"What they do is they loosen the harness on them to allow for the space for the coat to be there but really that's just fill space."
Steely says it's that "fill" space that could cause an injury in an accident. She says parents should remove the bulky clothing before putting children in car seats and if the weather demands it drape that coat over them for warmth.
