Cigarette suspected cause in fatal fire

LONGVIEW,TX (KLTV)- Investigators in Gregg County say a cigarette may have sparked an RV fire that cost an East Texas man his life. The fire broke out Saturday at Pine Meadows RV park off FM 2087, south of I-20 near Longview. Early Saturday, flames began shooting out of the RV at Pine Meadows.

"A little after 5 am fire department responded , extinguished the fire," says Gregg County Fire Marshal David Kidder.

"It was very high in the trees and the embers, everybody was going to their trailers to make sure there wasn't a fire at another trailer," says neighbor Lori Wright.

Neighbors knew there was a 50 year old man inside the trailer, but flames were shooting from propane tanks, and one woman's husband could not get to him.

"The propane was going up and he couldn't put it out, he tried," Wright says.

After fire crews doused the blaze, the discovery was made.

"We located the body of one male in one of the trailers," Kidder says.

Investigators say the resident was a smoker, and that appears to be the likely cause.

"Location of origin of the fire was in the area where smoking materials were kept where the ash tray was kept, and it was also near some ignitable materials," Kidder says.

A second r-v also burned, but no one was home at the time. The victims identity has not been released. Kidder the man's body has been sent to Tarrant county for autopsy and positive identification.
