Monarch butterfly migrating through NE Texas

Released by The National Weather Service in Ft. Worth:

EAST TEXAS, TX - The annual monarch butterfly migration is now heading through our area.

Unlike bird migrations, the butterflies rely on the changing seasonal winds to help them reach their destination. North winds behind the cold front that moved through yesterday means that we should see more of these butterflies in the area today.

Over a half billion monarchs from all over the Eastern U.S. and Canada migrate to their winter nesting grounds 60 miles northwest of Mexico City every Autumn. Without reliable October cold fronts, they would not be able to make the journey.
