Police: Man reaches 110 mph in chase down Hwy 69

BULLARD,TX (KLTV) - A missed turn signal set off a chase between a DWI suspect and police.

Bullard police say on Sunday morning, an officer tried to stop 40-year old James Hamilton.

Hamilton then reportedly took off, taking officers ten miles at more than 100 miles per hour.

Officials say the car Hamilton was in was stolen in Jacksonville.

"It had been a slow Sunday there hadn't been much traffic out that morning," said Officer Stuart Alexander, Bullard Police Department.

Alexander says Hamilton failed to signal when turning onto Highway 69 from FM 2493, that's when he pulled Hamilton over.

"As soon as the driver stopped he exited his vehicle and approached me rapidly and I told him to stop and gave me several orders to get in the ditch as soon as he did so he hopped into his car through the passenger seat and took off in his vehicle," said Alexander.

Officials say Hamilton drove down Hwy 69 swerving in and out of traffic at speeds over 110 miles per hour. After about 10 minutes on the road, Hamilton tried to avoid hitting a car and over corrected. Leading to a nasty roll over where Alexander was finally able to arrest him.

"The driver side door wouldn't open so we advised him to climb out of the window and when he did we put him in hand restraints," said Alexander.

Officials say Hamilton was intoxicated when the chase took place.

Hamilton was taken to ETMC in Jacksonville, where he only suffered from minor injuries.

He was later taken and booked into the Cherokee County Jail.

James Hamilton is charged with evading arrest, DWI, driving with a suspended license and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

His bond is set at $10,000.
