TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Tyler Police say a fatal weekend shooting started when the shooter's mother couldn't find her blanket in the middle of the night.

Police were called to a shooting in the 500 block of Selman St. just before 5 a.m. on Saturday. When they arrived a man leaving the house, 29-year-old Danez Dewayne Black was detained for questioning. Black was later arrested and charged for the murder of his 21-year-old cousin Marquis Dwain Black.

Family members say Marquis Black just turned 21 years old in August.
They say he was an aspiring rapper, always trying to make people laugh, and that he loved his family more than anything.

"His love was something that everybody looked forward to. He was a big man with a big heart," said his cousin Shunte Andrews.

Shunte grew up with Marquis. They were close. Their mothers were sisters and their fathers were brothers.

"If you were mad or upset, he was the one that would cheer you up because he was always joking and playing," she said.

Police say early Saturday morning, an argument between Marquis and his cousin Danez turned fatal. According to the arrest affidavit, Danez's mother had been looking for her blanket in Marquis room. When they got in an argument, Danez stepped in, saying Marquis was being disrespectful to his mother.

"They got in a heated altercation and it lead to Danez going back to his room and grabbing a .22 caliber handgun and he came back and shot Marquis multiple times in the chest," said Tyler Police Officer Don Martin.

It's something the family still can't grasp.
One of those taking the loss the hardest is his oldest niece Paris.
She says her uncle Marquis was her heart and she'll always love him.

"He was an all around loving guy and we just loved him so much. His rap career was just starting to take off and his life was taken too early," said Shunte.

And now, all they are left with are memories of Marquis, and unanswered questions about why his life ended like this.

Police say right now they have no reason to believe drugs or alcohol were involved in the shooting, but they do say that Danez Black has a history of violence. They say Danez was on deferred adjudication for aggravated assault when he was arrested for Marquis's murder.

Danez Black is being held in the Smith County Jail on $500,000 bond. He is set to be arraigned in the Smith County Courthouse Tuesday morning.
